The unit applies to periodic testing or inspection of raw materials or finished products as part of the production process.

Limited discretion, initiative and judgement may be demonstrated on the job in own work, either individually or in a team environment. Work may be conducted in a variety of environments i.e. operational workplace activities, restricted space, hazardous controlled or exposed conditions

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities.

The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:

requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employment

standard operating procedures

work instructions

oral, written and visual communication

quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output

housekeeping

tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control and recycling

This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising for the safe and effective use of testing processes and technology. This unit also requires communication skills for documenting and reporting test results and data collected. Problem solving and initiative and enterprise are required to identify and record required test results.

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to test or inspect product quality.
